Homie Grown is a beautiful collective

of people who faithfully come out every Saturday and care for plants that they have nurtured from the beginning.

Shout out to Issam, Jessica, Zakiya, Reia, Tiffany, Gabriel, Imani, Korin, & Khalieb.

Here, we will share the different plants that have been planted in this diasporic garden, a garden that has plants that represent the heritage of those who are a part of the garden crew:

Berries

Blackberries-

The common species, Rubusulmifolius, comes from the west and center of Europe and North Africa. It was well-known by the Greeks and the Romans.

Blackberries are an excellent source of vitamin C, vitamin K, and manganese.

Improves digestion and blood sugar levels, Reduces inflammation and Prevents cardiovascular disease.

Peppers

Cayenne pepper- Originating in French

Guiana, this famous chili has been used to

make the Cayenne chili powder used in

many cuisines

Thai chili- Not an African Chili. Thai Chilis

are the chilis universally used as “small

fresh chili”, it is small, often less than 1-3/4

inches long as grown in Thailand

Serrano-The serrano pepper originated in

the mountainous regions of the Mexican

states of Puebla and Hidalgo and are

perfect for salsas, sauces, relishes,

garnishes, making hot sauce and more.

They are usually best when roasted.

Bell Peppers- are native to Mexico, Central

America, the Caribbean and South

America.

Okra

It is disputed where the plant originated, most likely somewhere in

West Africa, Only the tender unripe fruit is eaten. As a vegetable,

okra may be prepared like asparagus, sauteed, or pickled, and it is

also an ingredient in various stews and in the gumbos of the

southern United States.

Sage

Sage is native to the Mediterranean region and is used fresh or dried

as a flavouring in many foods, particularly in stuffings for poultry and

pork and in sausages. Some varieties are also grown as ornamentals

for their attractive leaves and flowers.

Lentils

Lentil was domesticated in the Fertile Crescent of the Near East

Africa and the Middle East, then spread to North Africa,

Europe and the Indo-Gangetic plain. You can add dried lentils

straight to a pot of brothy long-simmering soup, or add pre-

cooked lentils to salads, protein bowls, casseroles, pasta, pilafs, and

other sides.

Outdoor Plant Care 101

  • Water

    -determine watering seeds

    - water on a schedule

    - water in the morning

    - check for pooling water

    - keep an eye on heat & humidity

    - where to water

  • Weeding

    - have a regular schedule for weeding

  • Deadheading & Pruning

    - keep plants free of withered leaves

  • Fertilizer

    - you can start with a good multipurpose fertilizer

  • Animal & Pest Control

    - raised garden beds and fencing helps keep pests out

    - research safe pesticides

  • Landscaping

    - have a landscape plan

    - be sure that plants receive enough attention, check on them regularly
